You’ll Want to Run Away to the Circus!
For three shows only, between April 26-28 (and including a Sunday matinee), TRACES, a highly energetic and unusual dance troupe graces the stage of The Music Center. No staid production, this – instead, the performers use every object imaginable (think chairs, wheels, skateboards, basketballs, etc.) to invigorate the audience, expanding the notion of what dance can be. Don’t come expecting tutus! The set is dark and the music pounds – boys and girls alike will be fascinated by the movements of the dancers – who appear to be friends hanging out – before they start their incredible, circus-like antics.
Each of the dancers in TRACES introduces herself to the audience using 3 adjectives or phrases, contrasting the first 2 with a third choice that’s unexpected. That’s the “rule of 3,” a classic comedic device. The TRACES artists demanded consensus to ensure that the descriptions were right for each other – it is known as their “creative biography.” The idea caught our fancy, and we had a few funny moments at the dinner table as we brought this assignment home. How about “athletic, dedicated and… giggly” for a teenage girl?
