How Do You Know It’s Summertime in LA? You have time to drive up the coast for a perfect outdoor lunch!
Before the crush of the summer season makes a midday trip to Malibu seem like insanity, treat yourself to lunch at a new cafe at the end of the Malibu Pier. You’ve driven by it for ages, perhaps wishing that someone would take over the dilapidated old structure and make it worthy of its chic surroundings. (It was once a Ruby’s Shake Shack but….)
Well, someone did and — luckily — they did it right. By that we mean Local, Organic, Delicious. Kid friendly and view worthy in a way that does the image of MALIBU proud.
The Malibu Farm Pier Cafe is at the END of the long pier (there is another restaurant on the first part of the pier, near the beach). The menu features local, organic and sustainable fare and is simply perfect for a lunchtime treat. Best of all, you can take your meal upstairs and soak in both the lovely views of the coast and sun’s rays.
Two other small businesses are open at the end of the pier, as well. A surf shop with overpriced trinkets, towels and tees and a shop where you can rent fishing rods and purchase bait. Fishing off the end is a popular activity, but we’re pretty sure that those who are fishing are doing so for their dinner (and are not the same crowd that frequents the pricey cafe).
Guests to the cafe order at a counter and eat at long wooden tables with sheepskins to ward off the ocean breeze, which comes in through the open windows. The decor is a friendly mix of luxury and home spun comfort, and the food feels like you might have dreamed it up yourself but could never approximate the freshness of the organic ingredients (grown at nearby Malibu Farm) or presented the dishes with such easy elegance. Here’s a link to the menu.
Here’s to a relaxed summer at the beach!
