Arts Brookfield presents a highly acclaimed public art installation by Australian artist Amanda Parer. The installation is titled Intrude and will be on view this Summer from June 5-11, 2016. Intrude in LA features seven monumental rabbits constructed of sewn white nylon that have been inflated and internally lit. Two of the seven rabbits were specially commissioned by Arts Brookfield, each scaling over two stories in height, with one approximately 39 feet high and the other 39 feet long.
Here is what Amanda says about her work:
“In my artwork I aim to raise questions about the natural world and our place within it. I try to communicate this by using light and dark, humour and drama. I aim to entice my audience with beautiful, mostly feral creatures enlarged within their given habitats. Scale and attention to detail is reflected not only in large-scale sculptures and public art installations but also to smaller, more intimate sculptures and paintings.”
Rabbits in Parer’s native Australia are an out of control pest first introduced by white settlers in 1777. Their intrusion into the landscape and impact on the country’s endemic species was the initial inspiration for Intrude. In contrast to this environmental undertone, the rabbits in Intrude also embody a furry innocence, frolicking through idyllic pastures and inhabiting the few open spaces that still exist in some of America’s largest cities. Their presence forces the viewer to engage with the urban landscape in new ways, encouraging us to get up close, cuddle and enjoy while also asking us to consider every species’ larger than life impact on their surroundings.
The seven rabbits of Intrude will be spread across three Brookfield properties on Bunker Hill and at the FIGat7th retail center in downtown Los Angeles as part of the four-city, national tour presented by Arts Brookfield. Australian artist Amanda Parer’s edgy and ephemeral artworks explore the natural world, its fragility and our role within it. Parer currently resides in Tasmania and her work continues to be acquired by both public and private collections. She has been selected for notable national competitions including multiple nominations for the Blake Prize and the Glover Prize. Parer is currently working on an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and installation at Harbour City Gallery in Hong Kong, scheduled for October 2016.
