A plethora of art openings are taking place this month, starting with architecture but including some rare California Impressionist paintings and a new show about mummies. Your assignment: take note of these openings and closings when it comes to planning your September!
OPENINGS:
Gehry at LACMA: Frank Gehry receives a major retrospective at LACMA, opening September 13. The exhibit will contain over 200 drawings and 65 models, and will examine the prolific body of work of one of the world’s most celebrated and innovative architects. Whether you’re a building buff, intrigued by the architect’s recent involvement with the LA River, or just plain love Disney Hall, don’t miss this change to consider the 86 year-old designer’s expansive career. Reserve your timed-entry tickets starting on September 9, 2015.
Go Broad or Go Home: The thing to see this month will be the interior of the new Broad Museum downtown. No doubt, you’ve seen plenty of Instagrams and news photos of the exterior, but to really decide what you think, you’ll need to see art inside the new galleries. Here’s what we thought when we saw the top floor, unfettered by walls or art, a few months ago. We’ll report back from the press opening in a week or so, but until then, go online and reserve your FREE tickets — as soon as September 23 – to see for yourself. We love the fact that there is not a ticket line in the lobby. Attendants will greet you with iPads and usher you upstairs!
Mummies at the Natural History Museum: What could be better than a new show about mummies, just in time for Halloween hauntings!? The new show Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs opens on September 18 and you can get your timed entry tickets now. The show, which features treasures from the vaults of The Field Museum in Chicago, sounds like a slick marriage of science-based technology and legit rare relics such as the “Gilded Lady” (above), beautiful limestone canonic jars, and a mummified baby crocodile! California Impressionism at The Autry: A highly-unusual art collecting story is at the heart of an exhibit at The Autry this month. The Gardena High School senior class purchased art for the school between the years 1916-1956, and the result is collection that is truly museum-worthy. On view for only a few weeks so make a plan to take a look at Maynard Dixon originals, and more, between September 12 and October 9, 2015. Don’t miss it!
FOR ARTISTS OLD AND YOUNG:
Whenever The Hammer opens its doors to the public for art-making activities, families should make a plan to head to Westwood. The museum’s community is very artist based, so you and your family will likely find yourselves creating something unusual and original alongside a working artists. Come to the 2015 Family Day: Community Studio on Saturday, September 12 for a true treat. Free!
CLOSINGS:
Three shows are closing at the Hammer in the next few weeks, making Labor Day a nice time to stop by and check out some interesting work. Mark Bradford’s Scorched Earth, a divine photography show called Perfect Likeness and Joseph Holtzman‘s family-friendly show, which we wrote about a few weeks ago.
