CODA, a darling from Sundance last year that was purchased by Apple (and is available on Apple TV) successfully found a new audience during awards season. The film has two Oscar nominations, and both are pretty significant. The “little indie” movie made it into the Best Picture race for the Academy Awards, and actor Troy Kotsur is the first deaf man and only second deaf actor to be nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award. Marlee Matlin, who won for Children of a Lesser God, also stars in CODA.
Set in Boston, CODA tells the tale of a girl who is the only member of her family who can hear. Here is Common Sense’s review (for 13 +). It’s a delight, memorable for real characters and problems, and it will now forever bear the moniker “Oscar Nominated.”
