Kik's Delivery Service - The Family Savvy

Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli in Los Angeles from January 25 – February 10,

It’s possible that you’ve seen Kiki’s Delivery Service, but have you seen any of the other masterful tales told on film by animation genius Hayao Miyazaki? This month you have a chance to become an expert — a range of Miyazakis’ films, and those of his contemporaries, are on the big screen at American Cinematheque’s Aero and Egyptian theaters, in a series called The Castle Returns: Miyazaki, Takahata and the Masters of Studio Ghibli 2013.

All who love whimsy and magic will appreciate the humor and creativity of over 16 films presented in the next two weeks, including several Family Matinee viewings and a few films not commonly screened outside of Japan.  Younger kids will love Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro, which are screened together as well as Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind. What’s great about these films is that they are not just for the very young – the storytelling and themes are more suited for older kids in the more complex films, making them as interesting for teens and adults. Environmentalists will adore the fierce green Princess Mononoke, those who are a bit braver and love witchcraft will spark to Spirited Away (which won an Academy Award in 2002). Howl’s Moving Castle is also filled with delightful witches, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature in 2004.
