Frank Gehry Retrospective Opens at LACMA

LACMA's Frank Gehry retrospective opens today. Not a bad time to do examine the foundation of a remarkable career. We have selected a few resources to help offer families a way to learn more about this work (see below). It's not hard to get kids to "ooh" and "ahh" about the unconventional shapes and lustrous surfaces of much of Gehry's work, offering everyone a chance to think about architectural design and how buildings interact with communities and people.

A Local Weekend: Loving UCLA & Westwood Village

This weekend, Westwood and UCLA is the place to be. In the space a few walkable miles, you can catch the #1 ranked NCAA soccer team in action, a bevy of the nation's top chefs assembled to raise money for kid's cancer, and contemporary LA artists teaching kids to create something new. You'll still have time to grab dinner and a movie, if you plan it right!

For the Clever and Brave of Heart: Escape Rooms in LA

There’s something new in entertainment, not just in Los Angeles, but around the country and the world.  Maze rooms (also called escape rooms), are a new hour-long adventure phenomenon that send you and fellow gamers into a locked room where you must assemble clues and use your brain to get out again.  Can your team can solve the riddle before the hour is up? Success calls on cleverness and the ability to work together - though admittedly, the added pressure of being eaten by a Zombie might factor in, too!

Orange County Great Park: Exploring a Park in Progress

Orange County Great Park bills itself as the “first great metropolitan park of the 21st century.” Currently, the Great Park consists of 88 acres, and amenities include the Great Park Balloon, the Carousel, the Visitors Center, the Historic Hangar 244, Palm Court and the Farm + Food Lab. Once completed, this Irvine-area attraction will span approximately 1,300 acres.

Allen Ginsberg’s Howl by Allen Ruppersberg

In an exhibit titled The Singing Posters: Poetry Sound Collage Sculpture Book, the iconic poem "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg is re-interpreted by conceptual artist Allen Ruppersberg. It's an awesome sight, and best viewed while listening to Ginsberg himself reading the hallmark text of the Beat Generation.
